Art viewing, in a mini-reality

In general, symbolic consistency is a function of tacit buy-in, collective identification, and repetitive social practices. We learn to speak and write, and we observe institutions coordinating and responding to language as though it is held in common. To say that the symbolic is in decline or disarray is thus to mark the loss of this effective common, to find that the authority backing the use of signifiers and grounding their felicitous signification across differences in context and groups has dissipated. Words drift freely and, as a result, fail to secure an order of stable interpretation; to the extent that interpretations held in common can provide defenses against traumatic antagonisms, the loss of functional meaning harbingers intensified encounters with the unassimilable.

[…]

This wholly irrational dynamic points to the dimension of enjoyment and desire: symbolic systems have changed, and the medium of language has undergone transformation, leaving individuals jammed in their own sovereign mini-reality, identification and projection, imaginary unbound.

Beautiful Night

Beautiful Night curated by Jude Broughan, featuring artists Karen Azoulay, Adler Guerrier, John Lehr, Reiner Leist, Daminico Lynch, Jasmine Murrell, Beuford Smith, Jenna Westra, and Jess Willa Wheaton.  The show is live on studioarchiveproject.com and runs May 25 – June 25, 2023.

Photography is about light (originally sunlight), and sometimes nighttime photography feels unexpected. Neon lights, camera flash, street lights, spot lights, tungsten lamps, high contrast, misty silhouettes. Nighttime is a restful time, when we unwind, hug each other, and look after ourselves, loved ones. Maybe go out and meet up, have some fun. Night is when we sleep and when we grow, our bodies relax and a time for healing. That inky blue twilight, then the star-filled dark night sky, souls gone before, and an as yet unmanifested void of exciting potential.

WEIRD MIAMI is the chance to ditch our jaded views of Miami and become “tourists in the ‘weird’ pockets in our own city.” – Adler Guerrier
There is a much more interesting — sometimes dark — and never boring side to Miami, one only known to the people who inhabit this town.  For any Miamian a typical day’s experiences could range from strange to the swampy sublime.  Is there any such thing as “Flori-duh?”  It is only when one accepts the city in all its glorious weirdness that one can unearth the cracked and quirky gems that lie hidden within.
The artists, both Miamians and non-natives, consider their experiences with people they have come across, through mysterious topographies they have discovered, and objects they have excavated or exhumed, as a way to make sense of or share their unique findings.
Exhibition is free and open to the public.
