The Casa de Africa was founded in 1986 in a colonial palace in Old Havana to showcase the history and culture of Africa.
There are valuable collections from 27 African countries, based on the collection of researcher Fernando Ortiz, who first used the term Afro-Cuban, and also on the African collection of Fidel Castro, which consists principally of pieces sent by grateful recipients of Cuban aid..

Decree 349
Issued by the [Cuban] government in July, Decree 349 aims to give the authorities total control over artistic production. Those affected include musicians, artists, writers, and performers, as well as the venues that allow creatives to host events that weren’t first approved by the Ministry of Culture. Those found in violation of the decree, which will be enforced starting December 1, will face fines, property seizure, and jail.

The exhibition, Pares & Nones – Photography from Haiti and the Dominican Republic, is currently on view at Casa de las Américas in Havana, from April 15 to May 15, 2016.
The curator, Alanna Lockward, organized the show for The Museo de Arte Moderno, Santo Domingo (October 16, 2002 -November 9, 2002); it was subsequently presented in Miami (Art Basel Miami Beach; December 3, 2002 – January, 06, 2003), Berlin (Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut; June 03, 2004 – June 26, 2004), Lomé (Goethe Institut; March 03, 2008 – March 19, 2008).
The exhibition features works by Haitian artists — Olivier Flambert, Adler Guerrier, Carl Juste, Roxane Ledan, Daniel Morel, Roberto Stephenson, Marc Steed and Dominican artists — Elia Alba, Vinicio Almonte, Carlos Acero, Ricardo Briones, Miguel Gómez, Fonso Khouri, Abraham Khouri, Darío Oleaga.
