lynne golob gelfman: scapes

The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum

Florida International University, Miami

Opening:  May 16, 2012 / 6-9 pm

May 16, 2012 – September 2, 2012

Lynne Golob Gelfman makes abstract paintings that are rooted in the visible world.  She identifies and isolates textures, forms or patterns, either natural or manmade, then repeats them to create compositions that seem as if they could flow forever in all directions. In recent years, inspired by morning walks along the Miami shore, she has been making works that evoke the reflection of light on water. But as a result of their repetitive markings, her works become as much about the process of their own making as about any outside source.

The works in the exhibition scapes refer to landscape but do not represent it. Instead, they suggest a sense of place.

In the most recent series, the dune paintings, the surface image changes with the slightest shift either in the viewer’s position or in the angle of light. These paintings, which are never the same nor fixed in time, offer an experience of perception- what happens when the viewer traverses the image.

The dune series was inspired by hiking through the undulating dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses, Brazil and seeing sand always moving in the play of wind and sun.

In scapes, Gelfman’s images lead beyond the referential and into an awareness of the elemental.

A.D. Barnes Park

A.D. Barnes Park is a 65-acre park nestled in the heart of one of Miami’s busiest areas. The park is dedicated to and named after the first Director of the Parks and Recreation Department, who strongly believed recreation was important to the lives of every citizen in Miami-Dade County. Since its opening in 1977, the park has integrated activities that serve people with disabilities into its programming.

The park is home to The Sense of Wonder Nature Center and Trail set within one of the few remaining Pine Rocklands in Miami-Dade County. As a result, it has become an “oasis” for migrating birds and, according to the National Audubon Society, is one of the best places to see birds in Miami. The Nature Center is also home to the Miami-Dade Fire Department’s Anti-Venom unit’s reptile collection. Whether it is snakes, birds, swimming, or just a day enjoying a sun drenched picnic, A.D. Barnes Park offers something for everyone!

Open Process features new work by four young Miami artists commissioned by MOCA. The artists were given access to museum resources, including its archives and permanent collection, and received professional guidance as they researched and created their projects. The exhibition provides the artists with an opportunity to develop previously unrealized ideas and reconsider their artistic practices within the context of the museum.

Open Process is curated by Ruba Katrib MOCA Associate Curator and organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami.
