Hialeah Park

The Herald:

“Activists, historians and Hialeah politicians gathered” … ” at the offices of the Dade Heritage Trust to celebrate Hialeah Park being placed on the National Historic Trust’s list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.”

It does not guarantee the destruction of park.

I propose to all a multi-disciplinary competition to propose programs for the park. The idea is simple — don’t focus on practical solutions for the park and yet, make it relevant again to us all. This competition should enlist all students(elementary school to college) to send in a proposal. Also, invite artists, musicians, dancers, storytellers, comedians to address the park. Hopefully, all these interventions would begin the re-establish the cultural value of Hialeah Park.

  1. Im a 41 y.o. living in NYC since 1990. I have so many wounderful memories of my father and I waking up every sat., heading to Mr. Dounnut and then off to Hialeah park to watch the horses train. It seems every time I go back home for a visit my city seems, in many ways, less and less recognizable to me. Aside from all the new consruction ( which has always been going on ) the people’s attitude in general, has changed. NO one seems to care about anything relating to the city’s colorfull past. It’s resadents seem to have put on the blinders once worn by the race hourses!!! I feel the park should continue being used for racing of all sourts.. Im well aware hourse and evean dog racing have fallen out of favor, ( I was never one for racing animals anyway) but ; I’m sure people still love watching races. Cars, motorcycle, bike, motorcross, multi-use sports arena/cpmplex partyspace, animal rehabilitation/bird/wildlife preserve…..so much land ….I’,m sure a little imagination could go a long way! It can evean become a big entertainment venue. If I remember the Metrorail has a stop there….what a waste!!! Wise up Miami!! in NYC the past is never far away,, thats whats makes it such a well rounded city. I wish you and your organization the best of luck. Please e-mail me with any good news.
